Mentoring a Child of a Prisoner
Historically 70% of children, who have parents that spend time in prison, will be in jail themselves, unless there is meaningful intervention. Offering mentors to youth whose parent(s) is incarcerated is a great preventative service for youth in their time of significant need. Statistics show that youth who have a mentor in their lives are much less likely to live a criminal lifestyle than those who don’t have a mentor. Through a federal grant from US Department of Health and Human Services, NH’s Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies have been working for over two years specifically targeting this population. Hundreds of children have been matched, but many, many more need to be informed of this program and matched. There are at least 1400 children of prisoners in NH jails. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ goal is to serve as many children of prisoners as possible; BBBS needs help from the public and parents.
